6. You cannot control everything.
You cannot control everything to make it good for everyone. What is good for you may be unpleasant for someone else. Light and shadow are always created together, and you are always experiencing one or the other; they are never biased towards one or the other, but always in equal measure. When you want something, you resent not having it or envy those who have it. You are unable to be grateful for what you have. When you are injured or ill, you blame yourself for not being able to do what you want or try to become capable again. You are unable to accept yourself as someone who can rest or someone who doesn’t have to do anything.
I am controlling things in a way that makes it seem as though I am not in control. It seems as though I did not create anything, as if I only chose my own interests, as if I have no control over the creation of other people or things. I believe that I was born into this vast universe, this world, regardless of my own will, and that I have no choice but to live according to the rules discovered or created by other people. I believe that I am alone, and that people, animals, plants, minerals, etc., exist for causes, reasons, and grounds other than my own. However, when I come to know myself, I realize that “others are a mirror of myself.” I understand that “my own creation is reflected in everything.” I repeatedly realize that there are no causes, reasons, or grounds other than my own for the existence of people, animals, plants, minerals, etc. Only then do I understand that I am controlling things even though it seems as though I am not.
Not knowing yourself doesn’t mean that bad things will happen or that you’ll become unhappy. Rather, it means that emotional fluctuations will be smaller, and emotional fluctuations won’t last as long, allowing you to be more true to yourself. You’re less likely to be swayed by external circumstances or situations, less likely to lose yourself, and more likely to choose what you like, what brings you joy, and what you want to do. You can maintain a state of calm, warm peace and tranquility.
While it may seem like you’re not controlling everything, you are aware of and recognize that you are in control. Even though you may feel anxiety and fear about the unknown future, your mind and body are at ease, and you are a calmer, warmer, and more secure being.
In a life where unpleasant things will always be present, choosing to act and speak with a calm, warm, and peaceful state of mind, rather than judging or making decisions based on what is right or good, allows us to live each day in a way that is more true to ourselves.
