19. What is the Self?
The self is simply emotions. Sensations, feelings, thoughts, consciousness, and will are just like people and things―they are part of the environment and circumstances. The self is merely experiencing the feeling of wanting to do something and the feeling after doing it.
The mind, which is a fluctuation of emotions, creates experiences. Everything in the environment and circumstances, including people and things, includes the thoughts, consciousness, and will that we think of as ourselves, and is a result produced by the mind, regardless of our own thoughts, consciousness, and will. Only emotional experience can change that environment and circumstances. Everything changes because we are alive and experiencing emotions, not because of extraordinary effort, unwavering action, eloquent speeches, or psychological communication.
A mind with little emotional fluctuation creates a reality where there are no unpleasant things for oneself. A calm and warm mind creates a good reality for oneself. No matter what happens, facing your own heart and simply feeling your emotions is the way to experience a reality that is true to yourself.
